SUMMARY:Studio Artist Showcase: Jan Smith Castronuovo "Then \ Now"
DESCRIPTION:HEART WITHIN THE ART\n“THEN \ NOW”\nA 20-Year Restrospective\nJan Smith Castronuovo\nJune 4 – ARTober 30\, 2026\nIt brings me such joy to see many of these pieces from 20+ years ago\, out of storage & up on the walls here at Bethany. This lets me see not only how far I’ve come\, but how some things haven’t changed much at all. The technique used in the older black & white pieces is “woodcut collage” printed by hand on Japanese paper. Interim works combine woodcut collage with acrylic paint on canvas. The newest works are digital photo collage\, either on paper or canvas. \nTHEN \ NOW focuses on relationships—with the individual self & with family members—being a wife\, mother\, sister\, daughter\, cousin—& the struggle to maintain that individual spirit within\, as outer needs from others become more complex. This exhibit is about finding & expressing Self-Love\, celebrating creativity from that deep meditative wellspring found inside each of us. Thank you one & all for hearing me out & seeing these pieces of myself needing to be revealed. \nGALLERY HOURS\nMonday – Friday 10AM-4PM \nAbout Jan Smith Castronuovo\nJan earned two master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin—an MS in Industrial Technology\, UW/Platteville (1980); & an MFA in Printmaking\, UW/Madison (1986). Her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art is from Florida A&M University\, Tallahassee\, FL (1979). She is proud to be an HBCU graduate. In 2015\, she founded Heart Within the Art\, LLC\, her Westchester-based fine arts business. You can see more of her artwork including wood sculpture\, paintings & “HWTA Jumping Brooms” on her Instagram @HWTAart.

This experience led her to pursue an education in early childhood\, and she is now a teacher at Elmwood Day School.   \nElizabeth has been the Director of Bethany Kids CREATE Summer Program for the last three years. In her teaching\, Elizabeth encourages young artists to work together as a community. She created the Bethany bees: Bee kind\, Bee creative\, Bee helpful\, Bee brave\, and Bee you! — not only to honor the bees on Bethany’s property but also to encourage a safe space for kids to be themselves\, work together\, and find the artist they are.  \nWhen she is not teaching\, Elizabeth can be found in her studio at Bethany\, where she creates her mosaic jewelry pieces!   \nRuby Sgueglia (they/them)\nInstructor: ages 6-7\nRuby Sgueglia is a multimedia artist and art educator currently residing in Putnam County\, New York. They have experience in a wide variety of artistic mediums\, with a particular concentration on painting and drawing. They believe that every child deserves the chance to be creative in a place where there is no judgement\, no emphasis on failure or success\, guided only by exploration and expression.

SUMMARY:“The Flock: Chapter 6” Open Studio Showing with Skyla Schreter Dance
DESCRIPTION:“The Flock: Chapter 6” Open Studio Showing with Skyla Schreter Dance\nDate & Time: Saturday\, October 24\, 2026\, 2-3PM\nFREE! Community Program. Registration encouraged.   \nSkyla Schreter Dance (SSD) returns to Bethany Arts Community for their second artist in residence\, creating the final chapter of their original\, narrative dance work\, “The Flock.” Join SSD at Bethany Arts Community for a behind-the-scenes look into the creation process of “The Flock.” This informal studio showing will begin with an introduction to the larger project\, followed by a short open rehearsal with the dancers working through the newly-created choreographic material. At the end of the showing\, SSD will present a premiere of the “first draft” of Chapter 6 – the 13-minute final chapter in the story; created entirely during the company’s Artist Residency at Bethany Arts Community. \nChoreographer & Artistic Director: Skyla Schreter\nRehearsal Director: Craig Wasserman\nDancers: Hannah Straney\, Piper Dye\, Cristina Moya-Palacios\, Kimie Parker\, Kristina Desjardins\, Mikayla Lambert\, Emily Mistretta  \nAbout “The Flock”\n“The Flock” is an original narrative dance work from Hudson Valley-based dance company Skyla Schreter Dance. As a powerful synthesis of artistic mediums and disciplines\, and inspired by the best-selling novella “Jonathan Livingston Seagull\,” “The Flock” tells the story of a restless young seagull named Jo\, who dreams and strives to transcend the limitations imposed upon her by the rigid traditions of her home Flock.  In her relentless quest to perfect her ability of flight and turn it into an art form and more than just a means to consume\, she breaks with both her family and The Flock\, and is banished and exiled for her transgressions. Rather than limiting her\, this opens up a whole new world of self-exploration and artistry\, where Jo is free to learn and grow\, build a new community rooted in her values\, and live the life she chooses for herself.  “The Flock” is currently mid-development\, and includes both live dance and film elements; including a short film “Jo’s Dream” filmed on Bannerman Island in the Hudson River\, in partnership with the Bannerman Castle Trust. \nAbout Skyla Schreter Dance\nSkyla Schreter Dance combines classical ballet with a contemporary aesthetic to convey modern-day stories and perspectives. Taking an inter-disciplinary approach\, our work often integrates film\, visual art and musical collaboration to expand the common boundaries of dance as a presentational art form\, while maintaining the body as the primary instrument for creation and expression. Founded and led by choreographer and director Skyla Schreter\, SSD is a collective of dancers\, designers and collaborators working across professional dance\, music and visual arts to connect and elevate our shared human experience through creation.  \nTo support or learn more about the project\, and to keep up with Skyla Schreter Dance\, visit: https://www.skylaschreterdance.com/projects/the-flock

During her time at Hallmark\, Elizabeth discovered not only a deep love for photography but also a passion for working with children\, particularly through portraiture. Ruby has taught a little bit of everything to people of all ages and backgrounds\, but nothing is as consistently inspiring and exciting as getting to teach in environments like Bethany Kids CREATE Summer Program\, where they have been the Art Instructor for three years now. They believe that every child deserves the chance to be creative in a place where there is no judgement\, no emphasis on failure or success\, guided only by exploration and expression.
