Author Program: “Groundbreakers: Black Movie Makers” Children’s Book Series

For more than 100 years, Black filmmakers have made incredible contributions to American cinema and culture.  These groundbreakers created thought-provoking stories about the experiences of Black people and changed film forever.  This six-book series examines their lives and innovative work. 

Ossining Village Historian, Joyce Cole, will interview Ossining resident and children’s book author Joyce Markovics and NYU film professor and filmmaker, Alrick Brown.  They will be discussing their “Groundbreakers: Black Movie Makers” Children’s Book Series.  

More About the Authors: 

Joyce Markovics has worked in educational publishing for more than 20 years.  She has written hundreds of award-winning nonfiction children’s books and recently started her own book development company, Bowerbird Books.  Joyce is passionate about telling stories that captivate and inspire young readers. 

Alrick Brown is a filmmaker and educator.  He found his calling writing, directing, and producing narrative and documentary films focused on issues affecting the world at large.  Alrick graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in English and an Ed. M.  There, he taught undergraduate courses on the African American image in cinema.  He received his MFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he teaches courses to both undergraduate and graduate film students. 

Books will be available for purchase and signing following the interview and Q&A session. 

Registration is not required.  All are welcome to attend.  This program is great for all ages and families.
