Title:  Got My Wings Workshop with OUFSD (this is for students only)
Date(s) and Time(s): October 24 and 26
Description:
Music by Daniel Blake
Choreography by Todd Hall and Tomiko Magario
Featuring Westchester Ballet Company

“Where do we find our freedom?” This question is a wake-up call posed by author and Buddhist practitioner Jarvis Jay Masters, who has been incarcerated and on death row in San Quentin, CA for over three decades for a crime he did not commit (read more at www.freejarvis.org). His 2008 memoir derives its title from the story of a bird perched on the wall of San Quentin, about which Mr. Masters remarks “That Bird Has My Wings!”. The metaphor of flight Masters evokes points to a freedom that is both corporeal and spiritual that is the primary inspiration for Got My Wings. Premiered on January 22, 2022 at Bethany Arts Community’s Season of Justice by Westchester Ballet Company, Got My Wings reimagines the theme of flight-as-freedom through a triptych of sound and movement. The work also stays grounded through the voice of Jarvis Jay Masters, who was interviewed especially for this work.

The student program that emerged out of this work takes inspiration from Masters’ life and writings to explore how art and creativity can help students to envision a more caring and compassionate society.

This program will be presented on October 24 and 26 at Bethany Arts Community. The workshop is planned as an off-site field trip so that students can experience the music and dance segments in a fully equipped theatrical venue with a notable commitment to exploring the arts as a vehicle for social justice.

The program will give students an opportunity to think critically from multiple perspectives thanks to a unique coalition of artists, educators and community advocates. Because of this the workshop satisfies a Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework (CR-S).
