Celebrate International Jazz Day at Bethany Arts Community with a trio of renowned jazz artists featuring saxophonist Dan Blake, pianist/accordionist Vitor Gonçalvez  and percussionist Rogério Boccato. These three musical explorers will present an evening of music by legendary composer and visionary artist Hermeto Pascoal, whose music truly embodies the universal spirit of jazz music.

Beginning with a stint with Miles Davis in the 1970s, Hermeto Pascoal rose to prominence beyond his native Brazil because of his unique compositions and idiosyncratic performance style, which has been documented on numerous recordings and has influenced countless musicians around the world. Central to Hermeto’s musical vision is the concept of “som da aura” (sound of the aura), where any sound from nature – a farm animal, a soccer announcer, a waterfall, a bird song – can become music. This sonic aura reveals the deep musicality that surrounds and unites us all. For International Jazz Day, join this trio as they play to celebrate our human capacity to embrace the unknown and to experience interconnectedness through sound.

About the artists:
A native of Sao Paolo Brazil, percussionist Rogério Boccato has played with legends of Brazilian music like Toninho Horta, and as a longtime member of the “Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo”, he has played with Hermeto Pascoal, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Egberto Gismonti and many others. He also has been featured on Grammy-winning albums by jazz masters like Kenny Garrett, Danilo Pérez and Maria Schneider. He is sought after for his work both as a percussionist and as an internationally renowned educator. http://www.rogerioboccato.com

Vitor Gonçalves is a pianist, accordionist, composer and arranger from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Before moving to New York City in 2012 he played with icons of Brazilian music like Hermeto Pascoal, Maria Bethânia, Itiberê Zwarg, and many others. He has since been featured on NPR’s Jazz Night in America hosted by Christian McBride, as a guest of the renowned Spok Frevo Orquestra, and on stages around the world from. In 2020 Vitor was featured on two Grammy-nominated albums, for Best Latin Jazz album with Thalma de Freitas, and for Best Large Jazz Ensemble with Anat Cohen. In 2017 he released his debut album on Sunnyside Records, and he currently leads one of the biggest representatives of Choro music (a rich Brazilian genre) in the USA, which has featured jazz legends like Steve Wilson and Fred Hersch. http://vitorgoncalvesmusic.com

Saxophonist and composer Dan Blake has toured and recorded extensively with Grammy-winners Julian Lage, Esperanza Spalding, NEA Jazz Master Anthony Braxton, and Velvet Underground founding member John Cale among many others. His multi-media compositions have been commissioned by the Jerome Fund and luminaries like the Mivos Quartet. Most recently Dan Blake premiered Got My Wings at Bethany Arts Community, a work featuring Westchester Ballet Company that focuses on criminal justice through the writings of incarcerated Buddhist practitioner Jarvis Jay Masters. He has worked extensively with Rogério for over 15 years on recordings and many tours, and is thrilled to be bringing a concert to Bethany Arts Community with them both. http://www.danielblake.net
