Curriculum Description:

This 4 week workshop covers the fundamentals of drawing for beginners  We will be using photographs,
mirrors, and still lifes as context and working with paper, pencil, charcoals and pastels. Students will be
encouraged to bring their own project ideas work on and exercises will be presented as tools for further
exploration in the medium.

Curriculum Objectives:

  • Participants will learn the fundamentals of drawing.
  • Participants will sketch the figure and draw a still life.
  • Participants will learn how to use the materials given.
  • Participants will learn the process of “drawing from life”
  • Participants will give and receive feedback regarding each other’s artwork.


  • Participants will know how to draw the figure by incorporating the elements of art and design
  • Participants will know how to use charcoal, pencil (i.e.: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B), and pastel
  • Participants will be able to add light and shadow using techniques like chiaroscuro and sfumato
  • Participants will learn proportion and perspective and how to see color
  • Participants will learn color blending
  • Participants will be more confident when talking about a work of art

Each session will follow this basic outline:

  • Skill Building
  • Individual teacher/student work
  • Sharing
  • Reflection
  • Closing/Next Steps

About the Instructor

Lindsey Francis graduated from Penn State University with a BFA and post bac in ceramics and a minor in psychology. From 2014 to 2015 she was the Valentine & Clark Westchester Community Foundation Emerging Artist at the Clay Art Center. Currently, Lindsey has her studio at her home in Ossining, NY where she is a member of the arts council and frequently shows her work at the local shops and restaurants. In addition to her ongoing studio work she is the Program Manager for the national Creative Aging organization Lifetime Arts, a community art show curator, mural artist, and an established Teaching Artist conducting more than 350 classes in the past five years.
