Name of Artist: Andrea Strongwater
Dates of Residency: May 2 – May 15

Residency Plan:
Andrea Strongwater has been working on a collection of paintings showing European synagogues at their best. The synagogues and their communities were all destroyed by the Nazis and related parties before and during WWII. The project wants to be a book. Andrea is now writing the text – 600-1000 words describing each community. The work will be published by Jewish Publication Society in conjunction with University of Nebraska Press. She will use her residency time to edit texts, write an introductory essay, and organize new lectures. The 83 synagogues Andrea has painted are in 15 different countries going by today’s political divisions. Andrea would like to create a lecture that explains more about Ukraine and how it fits into the world. If there is time, she’d also like to paint a new synagogue image.

Bio:
Andrea Strongwater has been an artist all her life. She lives in Manhattan, New York. Her work can be seen in galleries, museums, and shops around the world. In the past few years Andrea has focused on creating exceptional art for books. Her first published work, a young adult overview of the Lost Synagogues of Europe won two independent book publisher’s awards. A fuller edition of the project including 80 synagogues is in the works.

Andrea’s work is very diverse and includes artwork for gift items, teaching manuals for women in Afghanistan, jigsaw puzzles, lectures and exhibits of her big project documenting synagogues across Europe destroyed during the Third Reich. In all the overriding philosophy is making something meaningful and beautiful.
