2026 Fall Multidisciplinary Residency
Bethany Arts Community welcomes artists working across a variety of disciplines. Fall 2026 Community ProgramsJoin us in welcoming BAC’s 2026 Fall Multidisciplinary Artists-in-Residence!
This residency season, we welcome writers, choreographers, authors, fiber artists, theater makers, painters, musicians, interdisciplinary artists, community engagement artists, educators, poets, and more to Bethany for the development of new works and works-in-progress. We welcome 10 talented artists working across disciplines for our 9th annual Fall Multidisciplinary Residency.
As part of a residency at BAC, we ask each artist to build and facilitate a Community Program. Community Programs are a unique opportunity for both artists-in-residence and our local community to gather, engage, and be in conversation with one another through art. Community Programs are free engagements open to the public and/or in collaboration with a local community partner. We hope you’ll join these artists this residency season as they share their work!

Go offline! This summer I began work on a new project exploring the ways our intimacy with technology is reshaping us. Through weekly gatherings here in Detroit, a “working group” that I convened has attempted to map the hybrid terrain we now live in. Are digital and physical separate any more? What parts of ourselves – those parts incompatible with constant digital connection – are falling away? Receiving this residency offers me time to digest and write into the questions that came from this generous, cacophonous first phase of collaboration. It also offers the opportunity to “do” the work in another, more direct and experiential way: I get to step away from the daily tether of digital life for nearly two weeks. Thinking about this, I feel both anticipatory freedom and the anxiety of unfamiliar, unfilled space.

Christina Foloyan (she/her)
Dates of Residency: 9/22 – 10/6
Residency Plan
My residency will focus on advancing my debut album series at a pivotal moment in its production. With Part One in the recording phase, I will use my time at BAC to rehearse and refine songs for recording, practice for solo performances, and write some new songs for the series. I will use the studio space for daily piano and vocal practice, building the performance repertoire for the album’s release events. Alongside the music, I will develop the community programming that accompanies the album — designing the healing circles and workshops that will surround its release — and draft marketing materials, liner notes, and the album’s narrative text. I will also make meaningful progress on my family history book. Two weeks of uninterrupted writing time is rare and precious. For my Community Program, I would offer a music and storytelling workshop inviting participants to explore grief, joy, and resilience through song, writing, and spoken word.

E'mon Lauren
Poet, Performer, Educator
About Residency
E’mon Lauren
Dates of Residency: 9/22 – 10/6
Residency Plan
At Bethany I will complete the final revision of Finesse, my debut full-length poetry collection. The manuscript gathers thirty-four poems across four sections into one sustained argument: that Black women’s daily acts of survival, beauty, and self-making constitute a literature. The foundational frame is in place and the major poems are drafted, several already published. What remains is the structural and sequencing work that turns a strong collection of poems into a coherent book, and that requires uninterrupted time my schedule in Chicago does not allow. Mornings I will revise, with particular attention to the third section and its work on grief and collective memory. Afternoons I will read into the poets whose formal decisions I am in conversation with, and write new material if revision opens the space. Evenings I want to be among the other residents. I write alone, but I think best in community. I am coming to Bethany to finish this book.

About Residency
Kristin Marting (she/her)

Residency Plan
Inspired by the speculative fiction of Octavia Butler and the environmental nonfiction writing of Alan Weisman, Quintessence is a new environmental science fiction opera about othering, nonconformity, intolerance, and community that I am co-creating as librettist/director with composer Paul Pinto. The 90-minute multimedia opera tells the story of our dying planet in seven parts, scored for an ensemble of seven singers, four instrumentalists and electronics. Our earth is sick – it has been damaged beyond repair by our species. All humanity share an existential awareness of our fragility. There are too many of us, but too few other species. Our earth is no longer able to produce anything naturally so food and drink are created through technology. One world government controls all resources, which are distributed unevenly to haves and have-nots. As humans scramble to survive, genetic modification has become a worldwide practice with almost no one unmodified. But the modifications induce unpredictable abilities. Ongoing human conflict is weakening our already ailing earth.
Community Program
A Community Convening that includes conversations centered around the impact of our human actions on our earth and what we want to do about it. Details TBA.

About Residency
Laura Perovich (she/her)
Dates of Residency: 9/22 – 10/6
Residency Plan
During this residency, I will explore themes of craft, community, and corporality in the context of emerging sociotechnical systems. These investigations seek to bridge the space between my textile art and my movement practice. How do tools shape our physical experience of making? What do we learn about our bodies and selves by making with others? How do technologies further or interrupt this learning? During the residency I will create sketches, prototypes, processes, and first-attempts that will serve as foundation and fuel for this direction of work.

UOMOSOLO is a lonely middle-aged man who struggles to find acceptance in the society. Alone in his apartment, he plays with different identities in the hope of discovering the “correct” version of himself. Through dance, humor, awkwardness, and vulnerability, the work aims to portrait this tender but ma misplaced character. The piece reflects on loneliness, identity, and the pressure to define oneself within society. Eventually, the character’s insecurity becomes a doorway to freedom: the freedom to be the infinite possibilities of who he can become.

Michelle Elena Zarco (she/her)
Musician
About Residency
Michelle Elena Zarco (she/her)
Dates of Residency: 9/22 – 10/6
Residency Plan
For three years, I’ve taught music inside men’s and women’s correctional facilities through Musicambia – general music, instrumental skills, and songwriting workshops. During my residency at BAC, I’ll arrange four songs written by incarcerated songwriters into performance-ready works for chamber ensemble, giving them new life and a chance to be heard outside the walls where they were written. Art made inside prisons has always depended on collaboration to reach audiences beyond them, and I want to steward that process: taking songs shaped by real talent and circumstance, and arranging them with care. My hope is to present them not as a separate category of “prison art,” but mixed into a program alongside my own work. These are voices that deserve to be heard on the same plane as any other artist’s. Mass incarceration remains a defining issue in this country. This project insists that extraordinary artistic voices exist inside its walls, and belong in front of audiences on the outside. The arrangements from this residency will form the foundation of a future recording project.

About Michelle
Michelle is a classically trained flutist based in NYC, with a musical practice spanning classical, world, and pop idioms. She also sings, plays piano, and percussion. In 2024 she founded Orchestra Elena, whose debut performance at Brooklyn Bridge Park was broadcast live on WNYC. She teaches music and songwriting inside correctional facilities through Musicambia, and draws on seven years in classical artist management at Colbert Artists Management to advise musicians on branding and career strategy, most recently as the selected consulting artist for Chamber Music America’s Ensemble Forward grant. Born in the Philippines and raised in the U.S., she is currently training to become a healer through craniosacral therapy, energy work, and herbalism, and feels most grounded spending time outdoors in nature. She believes in the power of healing through creativity, self expression, and self empowerment, and hopes to help the people around her become healthier and more fully themselves.

My goal is to observe the contradictions within flora in service of a larger narrative about brown queer resilience in the face of extinction that will be in my memoir. I plan to explore this notion in the context of natural defenses like thorns, woody stems, and vines. At this time, my memoir is 75% complete. As a flâneuse, I want to meditate with the natural elements of the land to map adaptation, exposure, and resilience.I will spend the first two days getting situated. Next I will make some initial notes to scaffold my essay; I plan to take some photos for reference. In the second week, I will connect with the other residents to identify opportunities for collaboration. As a professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, I endeavor to find connections across disciplines when I am starting a new project and refining current ones. During the second half of my stay, I will continue to revise my prose and expand the essay. The chapel looks like a perfect space to parse my notes and photos. Since my memoir makes use of white space and footnotes, I will bring my mobile printer to see how my work looks on the printed page.

I will be creating a large-scale drawing that will provide visual cues of passing time through the changes of color. The drawing will also be punctuated with time stamps and arbitrary hourly wage amounts. By a capitalist standpoint, the work I complete should be quantified and assigned a value. My hopes for this is to reflect back on the viewers current understandings or biases of how art can and should be valued, through the lens we are so used to looking through, and hopefully leave a space for them to wonder about how this aligns with their own personal philosophy.
