This year, thanks to our committed Board members and the participation of designer and artist, Donna Chambers, we are launching our 2022 Bethany Connects Raffle, an opportunity for our Bethany community to acquire a one-of-a kind Donna Chambers quilt. Donna’s quilts were included in the Bethany Arts Community Black History month exhibition, “Ossining Black History & Culture: RESILIENCE. DEDICATION. EXCELLENCE.”BUY TICKETS OR DONATE
Our Donna Chambers quilt is a beautiful example of the artist’s extraordinary talent to marry art, design and heritage. Donna’s quilts reflect her deep sense of self, her commitment to her African American heritage and community and her magnificent aesthetic.
Donna Chambers is an award winning jewelry designer and quilt artist. She was born and raised in Ossining, New York. After graduating from Ossining High School, Donna earned her BA in fine art from Pratt institute with a focus on fashion, art and design. The richness of color and texture of her quilts and jewelry pays tribute to Vera Newman, a famed mid-century modern textile designer, who Donna had the honor of working for while in her design studio at Printex. Quilting has become a passion for Donna and it is actively combining the many threads of her life whether it be fashion, family, love, comfort or social commentary.
“Sticks and Stones” Art Quilt by Donna Chambers
The quilt measures 5’6”x 6’8” and is vertically oriented, signed and named on the reverse side. It is machine pieced and quilted.
“Sticks and Stones” is made of 100% Cotton Domestic and African Fabric and was created during the many difficult lockdown days of the Covid-19. Donna describes the quilt as ”soothing and calming” and “filled with love”, noting that the purple cloth speckled with gold thread hints at images of African royalty. The movement of a narrow strips of African fabric are enhanced by the Royal richness of the purple background and golden threads. Of course, this magnificent quilt is best appreciated when seen and felt.
