“The Joy of Nature” by Linda Perlmutter

April 9 - April 18

“The Joy of Nature” by Linda Perlmutter

As a child, Linda was always fascinated by the natural world and had intended to be a research biologist. She was given a microscope at an early age, and filled many logbooks drawing what she saw through its lens. This appreciation of nature continued when she later studied watercolor at The Art Students’ League. The result was a career of paintings that reflect “The Joy of Nature”.

Exhibit Dates: April 9-18, 2024
Gallery Hours: Monday-Friday 10AM-4PM

A generous percentage of the proceeds from paintings sold will be donated to Kids’ Club of Tarrytown & Sleepy Hollow, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support underserved youth in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. About Linda Perlmutter, President and Founder of Odyssey Art Centers and Odyssey Art at Sea
When her son, John, was an infant, Linda started teaching classes to both adults and children in her studio in Sleepy Hollow, New York. While adult classes are in watercolor painting, her children’s classes were based on a fine arts program which used the art of a culture as a starting point. Students typically stayed in her classes for many years, creating a perpetual waiting list. Her classes featured more than a basic art curriculum; they are really, as she called it, “a learning center” touching on art history, geography, science, literature, etc. There was always a yearly theme (such as Greek or Roman art) and a multitude of media was used in each session.

As her classes became more and more popular, she was invited to teach in various places outside of her studio. While she was a guest at Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires, the activities director watched her painting and invited her to come and teach the guests. For seven years she went there three times a year and taught creative watercolor classes. She had a cable show for many years, where artists of all levels watched her create paintings. Over 35 years ago she was invited to be an instructor on luxury ships. Classes which started with eight or ten guests (and before Odyssey Art at Sea typically shrunk to two or less participants) often wound up with 35 or 40 guests, or more.

She has taught art everywhere, from her studio, to the QE2 to the Whitney Museum. She got her start teaching art in the New York City public schools, and went on to teach a graduate course to teachers on the creative use of art media. Linda studied watercolor painting at the Art Students’ League in New York with Mario Cooper for ten years in addition to studying at the China Institute in New York. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Hunter College in New York.

Based on her experiences as an art instructor on luxury cruise lines, in 1996, Linda was asked by a cruise line to establish the Odyssey Art at Sea program. She has since trained over 380 instructors in her special method of teaching creative art to cruise guests. Potential instructors come from all over the world to her studio in Sleepy Hollow, New York for an intense workshop. She created a special program exclusively for Crystal Cruises called the Masterpiece Program, where guests enjoy an in-depth art experience working with a particular medium. Some of the areas explored to date are: acrylics, scrapbooking, stone sculpture, jewelry design, collage, mosaics, clay sculpture and reliefs, watercolor, pastel pencils, decoupage, relief paintings, and weaving.  She is very proud that the Odyssey Art at Sea program has been on every Crystal Cruises ocean cruise for 24 years.

Linda continues to paint regularly.  She employs a wet-on-wet technique, in which she applies paints to already moistened paper, which lends a soft-edged, almost misty look to some of her works.  Linda’s works have won many awards and are included in many private and corporate collections. They have been shown in galleries from Tel Aviv to Wisconsin and Maine.  She is also known as an artist for collections published by H. George Caspari, a premier note card company, which has been reproducing her paintings for over forty years.

She lives in Sleepy Hollow, New York with her German Shepherd, Apollo, and has two grandchildren.
