Visualizing Music: A Wearable Art Workshop
with Emerging Artist Fellow Elijah Hamilton-Wray
Date & Time: Tuesday October 13, 6:30-9PM
Registration Encouraged. Register now to secure your spot!

Visual art and music, as different as they may seem, go hand in hand. They are both mediums that provide context as to how artists view the world. This is a workshop for people who love both visual art and music and wish to explore the connection between the two.

You will be led through brainstorming and sketch exercises before eventually translating your ideas onto a clothing item using fabric paints and fabric markers.

We aim to bring to life a piece of music that deeply resonates with you. This workshop is meant to provide a space for building community out of a shared love of music and making. Come for some fun and a bit of guided creativity so that you can leave with a piece of wearable art that is meaningful to you and, hopefully, a new perspective on some of your favorite music.

This event is open to all, ages 16+. Any experience level.

 What to bring:

  • Bring a piece of clothing (shirt, sweatshirt, pants, skirt, etc.)
  • Bring a song of your choice to create with, plus headphones and a way to listen to your own music
  • Bring any additional art materials that you’d like to use

Additionally, participants will be asked to share 2-3 songs prior to the workshop that we will compile into a community playlist!

ABOUT ELIJAH
A Graduate of Northern Vermont University in Johnson, VT, Elijah received his MFA in Studio Art. With a love of comic book characters and Japanese animation from an early age, he often emulated those particular styles. Though his work does not especially represent those genres anymore, there is reference to it in his current practice. He tends to incorporate certain fantastical elements in his work that blend with realistic representation. His main mediums are oil and acrylic paint, but he’s also experienced in watercolor, printmaking, and drawing. In 2021 he moved to Kalamazoo, MI to work as Post-Baccalaureate of Art at his undergraduate alma mater, Kalamazoo College, where he guided graduating art students through their senior year and helped arrange numerous art shows and exhibitions. He now works as an artist in East Lansing, MI.

This Community Program is a part of BAC’s Emerging Artist Fellowship. As part of a residency at BAC, we ask each artist to build and facilitate a Community Program. Community Programs are a unique opportunity for both artists-in-residence and our local community to gather, engage, and be in conversation with one another through art. Community Programs are free engagements open to the public and/or in collaboration with a local community partners.
