Title: Cast Drawing: Light on Form
Instructor: Peter Leeds
Dates and Times of Class: 7 sessions; Thursdays, March 2 – April 20, 2023 (No class April 13) 4:30-6PM
Location: Right Classroom (Ground Floor)
We will take an in-depth approach working from plaster casts to gain an understanding of foundational drawing and the depiction of light on form. Cast drawing is a standard in classical academic drawing. It helps to correctly observe light and shadow. Through the study of light and its effects on objects we can extensively explore and render form and space.
Applying the block-in drawing method, the student creates an accurate linear drawing of the cast. Next, we will draw in the shadow shapes separating light from dark, mass in flat shadow tone and progress to modeling the form. We will discuss and use all the different tools and techniques to achieve beautiful results. This helps us create a convincing sense of three-dimensional form and space on a two-dimensional surface.
